1.1.1 Classification of Bloom's Taxonomy into Cognitive
Levels in the Natural Science and Technology Curriculum
Bloom's Taxonomy is a hierarchical model used to classify
educational learning objectives into levels of complexity and
specificity. In the Natural Science and Technology (NST)
curriculum under the CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy
Statement) in South Africa, Bloom's Taxonomy is adapted to
categorize cognitive levels for assessment purposes. The levels
are generally divided into three main categories:
1. Lower-order Cognitive Skills:
o Knowledge (Remembering): Involves recalling facts,
basic concepts, and answers.
o Comprehension (Understanding): Involves
understanding the meaning of informational materials.
2. Middle-order Cognitive Skills:
o Application: Involves using information in new
situations, applying knowledge, techniques, and rules.
