- First vs. Third world (Economic) - Rich vs. Poor - Economic growth

- Classifies stability and health of the country or region.

- First vs. Third (First = Developed, economic powers of colonial heritage, Third = not
involved in global politics, outside of political tenses of cold war, experienced horrors of
colonialism and is fearful of neo-colonialsm).
- North vs South (More wealth is positioned in the northern hemisphere in comparison to

- Advantages = We can see what stage each country was in, however it was primarily
based on economies, location and political affiliations
- Disadvantages = It set unreasonable development goals outside of the context of
nations. Did not take into account the ambitions and contexts of nations. Did not
acknowledge historical issues/implciations.
- Countries in the south are perceived as undeveloped and backwards.
- Australia shows us that this classification is entirely geographically inaccurate. Most
developing countries are in the south.
