DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act) - answer-DSHEA characterized
vitamins, minerals, and botanical extracts as dietary supplements.
-A dietary supplement, as defined by DSHEA, is "a product (other than tobacco) added
to the total diet that contains at least one of the following ingredients: a vitamin, mineral,
herb or botanical, amino acid, metabolite, extract, or combination of any ingredient
described previously."
-DSHEA specifically prohibits product labeling that refers to the treatment, cure or
diagnosis of disease
Pharmacognosy - answer Pharmacognosy deals with the natural drugs obtained from
organisms such as most plants, microbes, and animals.
Adulteration and contamination - answer The contamination with heavy metals,
microbial pathogens, pesticide residues, and improperly identified plant material and the
adulteration with toxic plant extracts, pharmaceutical agents, and other inappropriate
additives have generated concern among the medical community and lay public.
FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) - answer-FDA does regulate dietary
supplements as foods rather than conventional drug products.
Dietary supplement product labels must meet the following criteria: - answer-They
should describe the product as a dietary supplement.
-They must not include claims to prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure a specific disease.
-They may state that the product "supports the structure or function of the body" or
"general well-being of the body," followed by this wording: "This statement has not been
evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to
diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."
GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) - answerThe FDA inspects dietary supplement
manufacturers to ensure that they follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)
for dietary supplements.

Pharmacopeia (USP) for dietary supplements to ensure that they are marketing
products that meet current GMP standards for content and quality.
