Evolution refers to the gradual change in the heritable characteristics of a population
over successive generations. This change leads to biodiversity and the adaptation of
species to their environment, shaping the evolutionary tree of life. One of the most
influential theories of evolution is Darwinian evolution, which is based on the
concept of natural selection.

What is Evolution?
Evolution is the process by which populations of organisms change over
generations. These changes are driven by alterations in genetic information that are
passed from one generation to the next.
For example, neck elongation, one of the oldest human body modifications, doesn’t
result in a genetic change. Despite generations of following this practice, it does not
lead to a longer neck in offspring. This is an important distinction in evolution: only
heritable traits (passed down through genetic information) evolve, not physical
changes acquired during an organism's lifetime.
