Duration: 3 Hours

EXTERNA EXAMINER: DR VAN DER MERWE

,QUESTION 1: (20)

1.1 What is the difference between effective and reflective teaching? (4)
Read the given scenario, take some time to contemplate on it, and respond to the
questions based on your understanding of effective and reflective teaching in the
Foundation Phase.

It is a typical morning in Mrs Khoza's Foundation Phase classroom. The classroom is bright and
colourful, filled with toys, books and learning materials. However, Mrs Khoza's classroom does not
have a well-defined daily schedule or clear learning objectives. She often goes with the flow and does
not have a structured plan for the day. The teacher uses a single teaching method for all learners
and presents learners with large, unbroken chunks of information without providing opportunities for
engagement, interaction or checking for understanding. This approach fails to cater for the diverse
learning styles and levels of the learners. When learners make mistakes, Mrs Khoza tends to scold
them instead of providing constructive guidance and feedback.
1.2 Using Marzano's framework for understanding characteristics of effective teaching
identify FOUR (4) areas where Mrs Khoza's classroom misaligns
with what an effective teacher should do. (4)

1.3 Discuss the following characteristics of Marzano's effective teaching to support
Mrs Khoza towards effective teaching.

I. Helping learners interact with new knowledge (2)
II. Providing feedback (2)
III. Set goals (2)

1.4 Write a short paragraph on how you can use Kolb's experiential learning
theory.
(6)

QUESTION 2: (25)
Read the following paragraph and answer questions that follow:

Active learning is seen as the opposite of passive learning, an approach where the learning is
generated by the teacher and absorbed by the learner. Active learning can take many forms, follow
different models, and serve many different instructional goals. Many of these approaches have areas
of overlap with each other and draw on similar pedagogies that focus on learner-centred teaching
and learning objectives.

2.1 Reflect on your teaching practice in terms of providing opportunities and activities for
active learning (include at least THREE (3) points). (6)

2.2 John Dewey, Vygotsky, and Piaget advocated for active engagement in the
learning process, but they differed in their emphasis on social interaction,
the role of the teacher and the underlying mechanisms of learning.
Identify the difference among the THREE (3) theorists regarding the

, highlighted areas. (6)

2.3 How does John Dewey describe the "old-school" learning model? (3)

2.4 Elaborate on the following teaching strategies in the context of Foundation Phase with
your own examples:
• Discussion (2) • Group work (2)
• Cooperative learning (2)
• Role-playing (2)
• Small group work (2)

(10)

QUESTION 3: (20)

Read the case study on a developmentally inappropriate reading lesson in Grade R
and answer questions.

Grade R is a crucial stage in early childhood education, where children typically range in age from
five to six years old. A well-designed lesson should align with their developmental needs and abilities.
Ms Botha, a Grade R teacher, aimed to introduce basic reading skills to her class. However, her
lesson plan exhibited several characteristics that were developmentally inappropriate for her young
learners. For instance, Ms Botha chose words and vocabulary that were long, abstract, and unfamiliar
to the children, making it challenging for them to grasp the lesson's objectives. The lesson lacked
interactive and engaging elements. Ms Botha relied heavily on teacher-centred teaching and
learning, which did not include hands-on activities, games or storytelling that would have better suited
her young audience.

3.1 Analyse what developmentally appropriate practice and culturally responsive
teaching mean. (4)

3.2 Design a developmentally appropriate Grade R lesson for basic reading to
ensure that learners' optimal learning is promoted. (10)

3.3 In your own words, describe Maria Montessori’s view of a child. (3)

3.4 Critically discuss how you can use observation as an assessment method
(3) QUESTION 4: (35)

4.1 Distinguish between assessment of learning and assessment for learning
with examples. (6)

4.2 Discuss the purposes of the FOUR (4) types of assessment. (12)

4.3 Do you believe that providing feedback to each other enhances the potential for
greater success in learning tasks? Please justify your viewpoint. (4)

4.4 Read the scenario and answer the questions.
