Median eminence
,One of the three parts of the posterior pituitary gland. Located at
the base of the hypothalamus. Composed largely of nerve
endings of axons that arise primarily in the ventral
hypothalamus. Often designated as part of the posterior pituitary
but contains at least 10 biologically active hypothalamic
releasing hormones as well as neurotransmitters such as
dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and
histamine.
Pituitary stalk
One of the three parts of the posterior pituitary. Contains axons
of neurons that originate in supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei
of the hypothalamus where ADH and oxytocin are synthesized.
Release is mediated by cholinergic and adrenergic
neurotransmitters. Major stimulator is glutamate. Major inhibitor
is through GABA.
Infundibular process
One of the three parts of the posterior pituitary. Also known as
the pars nervosa or the neural lobe.
