4.09 NotesPeriodic sentences place the main idea or most important information at the end of the
sentence.
Example
“Unprovided with original learning, uninformed in the habits of thinking, unskilled in the
arts of composition, I resolved—to write a book.” —Edward Gibbon, Memoirs of My
Life
Effect
Gibbon could have started with the fact that he decided to write a book, but his series of
phrases builds interest, adds a bit of humor, and shows the irony of his resolution.
Balanced sentences feature two parts that are roughly equal in length, structure, and
importance.
Example
"On days when warmth is the most important need of the human heart, the kitchen is the
place you can find it; it dries the wet socks, it cools the hot little brain." —E.B. White,
"Coon Tree"
"Every man has a right to utter what he thinks truth, and every other man has a right to

Effect
Balanced sentences create rhythm and emphasis. Effective writers use balanced sentences
to show contrasting ideas as in the Johnson and Pope examples. E.B. White’s example
shows how balanced sentences are also used to elaborate on an idea. Balanced sentences
are often memorable because of their rhythm and emphasis. Think of some of your
