Unit 11 – Physiology of Human Body Systems

P1 - describe the organisation of the eukaryotic cell in terms of the functions of the organelles

In the human body there are levels of organisation that build upon one another and become more
complex as you go up the levels. Without these levels the human body would not function the way it
does as these systems are what work together to keep everything running smoothly. Cells are made
up of organelles, tissues are made up of cells, organs are made up of tissues and organ systems are
made up of organs. The relationship between these levels are quite close as the structure is closely
related to the function and without one the others would fail.

CELLS

The human body is multicellular as it is made up of two or more cells. Cells are known to be the
building blocks of life and are fundamentally important as without them there wouldn’t be many
complex organisms that would exist. Cells are made up of organelles which are structures that have
different functions to help the cell perform efficiently.

An example of cells in the human body are red blood cells. They are specialised cells with a particular
role in the human body, without them the human body would not function the way it does. Red
blood cells transport oxygen to the body, and carbon dioxide to the lungs.

TISSUES

The human body consists of four tissue types; epithelial, connective, muscle and nerve tissues.

Tissues are a group of two or more cells that are similar to each other and work together to perform
a shared function

An example of tissues in the human body are muscle tissues which are branched off into three
groups; skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscle is attached to bones by ligaments,
cause movement and support posture. Smooth muscle lines the walls of hollow organs and
involuntary contracts to perform functions needed throughout the body. Cardiac muscle lines the
walls of the heart and keeps it beating with involuntary contractions.
