1.1 OM, BUSINESS FUNCTIONS AND VALUE CHAIN
What is Operations Management?
• A core business function of every company
• Plans, organizes, coordinates, and controls the resources needed to produce the company’s goods
and services.
• Focusses on the transformation process of inputs into outputs adding value.
o Inputs: materials, technology, information, facilities, people, ...
o Outputs: finished goods or services
• Value added: net increase between value of product and value of all the inputs.
o waarde is subjectief, de klant gaat deze waarde beoordelen - value is what you pay for -
kijken naar het maximaliseren van de waardetoevoeging
o Zoveel mogelijk de activiteiten vermidneren die geen waarde toevoeging doen
• Aims to build competitive advantage and success
Operations management aims at maximizing the value added or productivity
• Value added = net increase between the final product value and the value of all inputs
• Minimize waste: eliminate activities that do not add value
• Maximize efficiency: perform activities well at the lowest possible cost

Inbound logistics houdt zich bezig met zaken zoals grondstoffen, materiaal om te verpakken en producerne.
Operations kijkt naar hoe de productie gerunt zal worden.
Outbound logistics: hoe gaan we onze klanten aanleveren. Er zit altijd een zekere onvoorspelbaarheid in de
vraag - je moet ergens een optimum vinden zodat er niet te veel verspilt wordt maar ook genoeg aangeboden
wordt.
Support activities: aankoop dienst, personeelsdienst, infrastructuur, technologie - zorgen ervoor dat je als
bedrijf kan opereren en naaar waardetoevoeging gaat

Beslissingen nemen:
• We starten bij het strategische niveau - hier ga je beslissen wat het bedrijf zal doen, op lange termijn
en zetten de richting uit voor het bedrijf.
• Tactisch level/operationeel niveau: frequente beslissingen, meer korte termijn; moeten aansluiten bij
de strategische beslissingen. Ondersteunen het strategische niveau.
• Er is een gans continuüm: de mate waarin een bepaalde beslisisng meer strategisch of tactisch is
