1. Duchamp is a key influence in the idea being more important that the finished
artwork – through his use of Ready mades.
2. His philosophy was one that stated that whatever the artist did, was by that very fact
(that it was done by an artist) a work of art.
3. Started in 1960s.
4. Artists started focusing on the idea – what the artwork was essentially about.
5. If the work existed as an idea, it was no longer necessary for it to exist as a finished
work.
6. The work originates in the idea / mind of the artist, but it also exists in the mind of
those who see / experience it. This allowed for artworks to be created by the artist
and the viewer.
The Existing art world:
- Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Photo Realism….
- A work usually consisted of ‘traditional’ media – paint, sculpture.
AND / OR
- A work consisted of recognisable subject matter – portraits, landscapes.
- Art was a commodity – to be bought and sold
- It was part of a gallery / patron system.
- This meant the art works had to be permanent, portable, and if possible, could
increase in value.
, ANTI-ART revisited:
Duchamp is a KEY influence on Conceptual art.
1. Duchamp strived to remove ‘art as a commodity, that needed to be exhibited and
bought and sold (gallery system / patrons). Art became the property of another
person to be displayed in another setting.
2. Some Conceptual works exist in remote locations - they are very difficult to view.
Some are so large that the entire work cannot be seen in it’s entirely in one view.
Works are made out of temporary media, such as snow and leaves, some are
constructed and then after a period of time they are dismantled. Some works never
have material existence and exist only in the mind.
3. With many forms / modes of Conceptual art we find the artwork moving out of the
gallery.
MODES – the manner in which a work is made:
1. Performance Art
2. Installation Art
3. Land Art
4. Process Art
5. Pure Conceptual Art
6. Video Art
7. Body Art
8. Text Art
