BIOD 151 LAB 4 A&P I.| GRADED A+
BIOD 151 LAB 4 A&P I.Notebook Entry For: Experiment 4 - Respiratory System Date: 10/16/2019 Title - Respiratory System Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to understand the general anatomy of the respiratory system, learning the difference between restrictive and obstructive lung disorders and examples of each. We will also look at common pulmonary function tests and demonstrate spirometry. Procedure: We will look at alveolar ventilation, discussing the respiratory system and will also perform an experiment measuring pulmonary ventilation to assess pulmonary function. Key Terms: • Pharynx - the throat region • Larynx - our voice box • Trachea - main wind pipe • Bronchi/Bronchus - The main passageway into the lungs. Made up of the right main bronchus and left bronchus. • Bronchioles - The bronchi become smaller the closer they get to the lung tissue and are then considered bronchioles. • Alveoli - tiny air sacs called alveoli, which is the site of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in the respiratory system. • Anatomical dead space - the total volume of the conducting airways from the nose or mouth down to the level of the terminal bronchioles, and is about 150 ml on the average in humans. The anatomic dead space fills with inspired air at the end of each inspiration, but this air is exhaled unchanged. • Alveolar Ventilation Rate - (AVR) Alveolar Ventilation Rate - The most relevant measurement of how the body takes the oxygen from our air and uses it to supply the tissues with the oxygen and then also shows us the bodies ability to remove carbon dioxide from those tissues. • Spirometer - A spirometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs. A spirometer measures ventilation, the movement of air into and out of the lungs. The spirogram will identify two different types of abnormal ventilation patterns, obstructive and restrictive • Spirometry - is a common office test used to assess how well your lungs work by measuring how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale. Spirometry is used to diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions that affect breathing. • Pulmonary Fibrosis - Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that occurs when lung tissue
