1. INTRODUCTION
Dear MNG4801 Student
Tutorial Letter 202 provides details on what was expected of you for Assignment 02. You will receive
your marked assignment, with the marker’s comments, and you can compare your performance
with the assignment evaluation sheet (rubric) and with the contents of this Tutorial Letter.
2. ASSIGNMENT 02
The due date and requirements for Assignment 02 were given to you upon registration. As such you
had plenty of time to prepare for this assignment and to make inquiries prior to the submission of the
assignment on the due date.
For this assignment, you were required to consult your prescribed book, the study guide, the case
study, and if you felt it was necessary, other publicly available information sources. I allowed publicly
available sources because of the requests that I received. Using publicly available information was not
a requirement but it was permitted if the information extracted would enrich your assignment in a
scholarly manner.
The assignment was for 80 marks and it contributed 40% towards your year mark. Assignment 02
was an essay-type assignment. The assignment evaluation sheet (rubric) included in this tutorial letter
provides the expectations for the assignment and you were given the criteria for the technical aspects
of the assignment in your Tutorial Letter 101. You would have been penalized for not adhering to the
assignment instructions, guidelines and for poor citations, referencing and for late submissions.
It is particularly important that you see assignments as learning opportunities designed to demonstrate
what is expected of a postgraduate student doing this course. The intension when setting
assignments is to prepare you for the examination that counts 70% towards your final mark. In the
examination you will need to know how to interpret and answer case study questions and you will
need to follow the given instructions. Just like assignment 02, your examination will require you to
apply your knowledge of strategic management and to apply correct theory in practical situations to
succeed.
At postgraduate level, it is completely possible to write a full-page answer and not get marks. This occurs
when students answer using related but incorrect theory and when they neglect to interpret or apply
the theory. It is important that you make sure you are answering the question. Getting marks for your
attempt at answering a question may have been the case at undergraduate level but now at
postgraduate level, the expectation is that you know the foundations of strategic management and
that you answer using the correct theory.
