Week 4: Small Group Discussion
Hello everyone
1. What were your first impressions of me, or what type of first impression do others
have of me?
2. What does my face look like when I think no one is looking?
3. If you did not know me, based on my nonverbal communication, would you
approach me? Why or why not?
I chose my youngest daughter Shahana (Hana), to ask about what was her first impression
she felt about me. Hana explains when she was younger her impression of me was that I was
angry, and mean but as she got older, and really started to understand that everything, she
thought was wrong. She realized I was not mean but assertive, but was listening to understand
because oftentimes as a child we just listen to respond. I also realized that although you were
angry, you were within your rights because you were facing a lot of challenges on your own and
you sometimes things became extremely frustrating. My daughter states my face looks calm, and
sometimes it looks like I am in deep thought when I think no one is looking. I see strength in my
mother’s face. I think you have a lot on your mind and trying to figure it out. If I did not know
you based on your nonverbal communication, I would approach you because your aura is
inviting and soothing. I feel when you are in a comfortable setting, I am approachable.
1. Did what I learned surprise me?
2. Was it easy to ask these questions and listen to the answers?
I was not surprised about what I learned from my daughter because I was a single mom of
four children. My focus was and still is on them to make sure they were taken care of. It was my
responsibility to make sure they had the best education and to keep them busy so they would not
get caught up with the wrong crowd. As Hana mentioned, I was very assertive because migrating
from another country where a women’s duties were to take care of the home and was not
encouraged doing other than domesticated work.
