1. What are some examples of authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles? What situations could they be
useful in?
- Authoritarian: directive behaviors used. Policy and decisions are made solely by a leader which dictates tasks to followers.
Tells followers what to do and how to do it. Based on the task or giving out orders. May create hostility and dependency.
o Very good for crisis or code situations.
- Democratic: based on relationships and person orientation and group discussion and decision. Human relations and teamwork
are focused. Shared responsibility with decision-making. May take longer because of the time needed for group consensus.
Challenge is getting people focused on the problem and action steps. Need motivation.
o Very good for the interdisciplinary team efforts for patient care.
- Laissez-Faire: promotes complete freedoms for groups and individual decisions. Minimal leader participation. Leaders often
are apathetic with this style. No clear decision may be produced. More structure for followers is needed as the leader does not
give it to them it.
o Very good for situations involving fully independent care providers and professionals.
,2. What are the definitions and examples of bureaucratic, servant, situational, authentic, clinical, complexity, and charismatic
leadership?
- Bureaucratic: Leaders tend to strictly enforce regulations and statuses in hierarchy, maintain status quo, and carry out policy
and procedures.
- Charismatic: they attract followers with their presence and motivates the team to follow their lead. Likeability helps lead
success. Good for high energy workplaces with motivation.
- Servant:leaders who share power and decision making with subordinates and direct the organization based on a team. Puts
others first and make sure their needs are met for personal growth.
- Situational: they see the leadership style based on what is effective through assessment of situation and identification of the
style which matches the situations needs.
- Complexity: uses science principles and thought to understand the enviroemtn and connect with organizational culture where
groups need to learn from unpredictable issues.
- Authentic: leadership based on being ones true self in which the leader is aware of how they think and behave and are
percieved by others as being aware of their own values and strengths and the context of how the operate.
- Clinical: ones who demonstrate clinical competency and have good communication and supportive of the work place. Often is
the normal staff nurse. They influence point of care situations.

- Female leadership is a structure that is dynamic and expanding and contracting as needed. Characterized by a concern for
family, community, and culture. Democratic and focusing on maintaining connections and relations with others and processes.

4. Describe Six Sigma
- Six sigma is a quality and decision support technique that uses data to build process improvement models and eliminate defects
in safety and quality in healthcare.
5. Compare transactional leader and transformational leader- what are some example behaviors of each?
- Transactional Leader: one who functions in a caregiver role and is focused on day to day operations. Must survey followers'
needs and set goals based on expectations of followers. Focused on maintenance and management of ongoing and routine
work.
- Transformational Leader: one who motivates followers to perform their full potential over time by influencing changes in
perceptions and providing a sense of direction. use of charisma, consideration and stimulation to increase satisfaction and
participation of followers. Empowers others.
6. Briefly explain the situational leadership model.
- Focuses on interactions between task behavior, relationship behavior, and performance readiness of followers.
- Uses a grid with 4 quadrants to describe leader behavior- high task high relationship, high task low relationship, low task high
relationship, low task low relationship.
- Must consider amount of ability, knowledge, skill, experience, willingness, confidence, commitment and motivation for tasks.
