The Person of Jesus Christ
• Jesus’ Self-Understanding (was his relationship with
God unique, and did he think he was himself
divine?):
Authority of Jesus, suggesting he is more than a teacher:
• The figure of Jesus of Nazareth is seen with an unparalleled sense of power
and authority:
1) Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) “You have heard that it was said…
but I say unto you.” - Moses spoke from Mount Sinai, Jesus is a greater
Moses.
2) Begins his words with “Amen, Amen…” (eg Matthew 5:18), as if he
“knew himself to be the mouthpiece of God.” (J.M. Ross, Expository
Times)
3) Sermon finishes with the words: “he taught them as one having authority
and not as the scribes and Pharisees.” (7:29)
Arguments for a Unique Relationship with God:
• Gospel of John:
• John’s Gospel proclaims a majestically high Christology (high
status for Jesus). Some have seen in John a Christology that finds
no parallel in the other Gospels.
• “The Word was with God and the Word was God” (Prologue John 1)
• The ending, “My Lord and My God” (20:28) - confession of Thomas
• The seven ‘I AM’ sayings (The Bread of Life (6:35), The Light of the World
(8:12) etc)
• Recollects Exodus 3:14 - name of Yahweh
• John 8:58 “Before Abraham was, - I am”
• But is John historically accurate? Why is it so different from Matt, Mark,
Luke?
• Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke):
• Any self-understanding is more hidden. (Synoptic Problem =
question of the specific literary relationship among the 3 synoptic gospels,
the source(s) upon which each synoptic gospel depended when it was
written?, Messianic Secret = Jesus is portrayed as commanding his
followers to maintain silence about his Messianic mission, hypothesis of
Wrede (1901))
• However in Matthew 11:27: “All things have been handed over to me by
my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one
knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Father chooses
to reveal him”
, “let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his
being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.
He did not intend to” - C.S Lewis (Mere Christianity) (argues that he
was the Son or a madman, not a teacher)
Key moments in Jesus’ Self Understanding:
• In the Temple as a boy: “Did you not know that I must be about my
Father’s business” (Luke 2:49)
• Baptism: “the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice
from heaven said ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well
pleased.’” (Matthew 3:16-17)
• Transfiguration: “he was transfigured before them, and his clothes
became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them… a
voice came from out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”
(Mark 9:1-8)
• Gethsemane: Jesus addresses God as ‘Abba’ (father). Reflects the
Aramaic behind the Lord’s Prayer, ‘Our Father’.
• Trial before Caiaphas: “the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ,
the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “ I am, and you will see the Son
of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of
heaven.”” (Mark 9: 55-64)
• The person of Jesus Christ (Revision Sheet Notes)
Intro:
• Jesus makes Christianity distinctive. Took aspects of Judaism and made
them his own, attracting followers, sparking new religion. These followers
spoke of teachings and actions of Jesus, but also the crucifixion and his
resurrection.
• As it spread, nature of Jesus was explored, challenged, defined. By
451, Jesus was acknowledged by mainstream Christianity as fully God
and fully human, making him different to other inspiring preachers and
different to other prophets.
• Jesus’ teachings were extremely controversial to the society of the time:
God of love, not punishment, who welcomes all without exc-eption. It could
be argued Jesus was more a prophet than anything else, but he was
certainly a teacher and a teacher of wisdom. But work w/ outcasts + poor
suggest to others that he was a liberator.
• In Modern Theology, quest for historical Jesus = very important (20th
century). Finding out who he was, if it matched his portrayal in Gospels.
Questions who Jesus thought he was and whether he thought his
relationship with God was unique or not.
• Jesus the Son of God:
