a) Indigenous Knowledge - it is the traditional knowledge that indigenous people have
brought down with them from earlier times through the oral tradition. This is the
knowledge used by local people to make a living in a particular environment.
b) Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) – according to Tharakan indigenous
knowledge systems contains knowledge developed within indigenous societies
independent of the modern scientific knowledge.
c) Traditional Knowledge – refers to the knowledge passed from generation to
generation and that form part of the traditions of the indigenous societies. The
knowledge passed to another generation act as the custodians.
d) Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) – refers to the evolving knowledge collected
by indigenous people over the years through direct contact with the environment.
This knowledge is specifically about the relationships between plants, animals and
natural phenomena.
e) Traditional Environmental Knowledge – is defined as the knowledge collected by a
group of people through generations in contact with the nature. This includes a
system of classification, observations about the local environment and factors that
affect the resources.

The importance of indigenous knowledge is its contributions to local empowerment and
development. Indigenous people can provide valuable input about the local environment and
how to effectively manage its natural resources. Many feel that indigenous knowledge can
provide a powerful basis from which alternative ways of managing resources can be

desirable, economically affordable, and sustainable and involve minimum risk to rural
farmers and producers, and above all, they are widely believed to conserve resources.
