The Brain Drain that is currently happening in Africa, has devastated many membering countries and the effects have created drastic changes and implications for lifestyle and healthcare. The brain drain refers to the “International migration of people, in particular, those moving from developing countries to develops ones.” (Falola and Mbah 225). You can also look
at the brain drain as the name itself. Africa has a “brain” that is made up of the Economy, Politics, Social, and Health Care. Due to many healthcare personnel starting to migrate outside the country Africa’s “brain” has been drained of its many make-ups. The absence of proper healthcare workers has resulted in an inadequate supply of human recourses which has resulted in Sub-Saharan Africa bearing over 24% of the global disease. Healthcare systems in the region have inadequate infrastructure and recourses and struggle to provide proper healthcare for all. The Africans that are leaving, are leaving due to working below wage, new opportunities, and continuing their professional education. Though some Africans feel that developed countries are adding to the brain drain because they are recruiting African healthcare professionals and having them move to their country. Even though recruitment was part of the problem, it wasn’t a big portion as most people left because they wanted to join their family, or they themselves had the idea for a better opportunity. The healthcare system has a Drastic fall, which essentially also affects population survival rates. If you have a country devastated by diseases, but no proper health care, the people will suffer the consequences, of death. Another part of Africa’s brain that has been drastically drained was the Economic, Social,
and Political system. It had a huge impact on cultures and societies as people were leaving there was not many left to keep on the practices of cultures or religion. Cultural expression has also decreased due to migration. Much of the migration was voluntary rather than forced. The fertility
patterns also decreased in migrating receiving countries. This was due to a family having to split up when migrating. Either one person in the family would start off, which means if they are married, they aren’t going to have babies in the other country. Most migrating people were either
with family or alone and if you alone migrating, you’re not going to have a kid right away. It also had impacts on social structures but in a positive way. It improved the housing situation for foreigners and improved the educational and vocational qualifications of second generations of migrants. South Africa’s shortage of skilled workers resulted in negative effects on the country’s economic prospects and socio-economic growth and development. Africa lost a lot of money, due to developed countries recruiting their doctors/health personnel. Africa had to use around 184,000$ for each student they trained, while developed states don’t have to spend a dime on training because they are already trained. Developed countries aren’t losing money, but rather developing countries, as they have to put in the money to train these healthcare workers. Africa has a chance of coming back from the Brain Drain, but only if the African governments stick to their new implications. For example, African Health Ministers pushed through resolutions for urgent action to curtail the unplanned and disastrous emigration of healthcare workers. Implementing codes of conduct and adopting the first Global code of practices on international recruitment of health personnel, is just a step in the right direction toward progress. If African governments gave reasons for people to stay, they might see results in a decrease in the drain. They could be hiring up the wages and giving out more opportunities
