Lecture Notes: Effects of Drug Addiction
First use/rare use of addictive recreational drug: brain is flooded by dopamine, pleasant
slowness, euphoria, feeling of extreme pleasure, orgasm-like, calmness
Regular use: person doesn’t feel normal without substance, body and brain adjust/reduce
receptors and production of NT to account for regular outside supply. Person becomes
dependent on outside source to maintain homeostasis.
Most substance dependence follows “hypo-dopaminergic” hypothesis:

Dopamine mimicked by outside source

Less natural dopamine release

Less receptors for dopamine
Biological dependence vs. Addiction:

Biological dependence is often a prerequisite for addiction, but not equal to it
Addiction: craving/pursuing an intensely pleasurable/rewarding experience despite serious
consequences/repercussions
