The main difference between dysthymic disorder and major depressive disorder is a dysthymic disorder is characterized by periods of normal mood that last for a few days and up to two months. Major depressive disorder diagnoses has increased in the last few decades and are by far the most common form of mood disorders. The criteria for a diagnosis of major depressive disorder is when a person needs to, "…exhibit more symptoms that are required for dysthymia and that they symptoms be more persistent" (Butcher, Mineka & Hooley, 2007, p. 231). Meaning a person would need to be in a major depressive episode regardless if it is a single or recurrent event. Those suffering must have obvious signs of depressed states or, "…loss of interest in pleasurable activities most of every day, nearly every, for at least two consecutive weeks" (Butcher, Mineka & Hooley, 2007, p. 231).
