Mary I– queen from 1553 – 1558

Mary i Consolidation of power–
- After the popular support she received, mary assumed people wanted
catholicism but people actually just wanted bloodline
- Mary was keen to reinstate catholicism
- Mary didn’t need to consolidate power in the eyes of the public due to
her unquestioned legitimacy as heir to the throne
- Many of the more experienced councillors were favourites of edward
and so were protestant while Mary’s favourites– waldegrave– had no
experience
- Mary reinstated Gardiner to the council
- 50 councillors were appointed throughout her reign leading to
factionalism
- After gardiner– whom mary blamed for allowing protestantism to begin
under henry viii but who was her closest advisor– died in 1555, mary’s
government was dominated by philip ii and renard- charles v
ambassador

Mary i Rebellions–
- Mary was 37 and unmarried when she took the throne
- Mary married philip ii of spain without her council’s permission
- This decision created lots of xenophobia
- It also pushed scotland and france into closer alliance
- Mary limited phillip to being king in name only and was forbidden from
influencing policy
- The two only met once in the course of the marriage
- 1554 wyatt rebellion over the spanish match
● The marian government attempted to construe this rebellion as a
protestant one to distract from the unpopularity of the marriage
● Four concurrent rebellions were planned but only wyatt gained
enough men
● 3,000 men marched on london but the citizens did not let him in
● This rebellion prompted mary to execute LJG due to her status as
a figurehead along with 100 conspirators
● Elizabeth (later elizabeth i) was also imprisoned and then
released after parliament argued her imprisonment was wrongful
