,Abstract
The sweetener aspartame is widely used to replace sucrose because its sweetening power is
stronger. It is 180 to 200 times more sweet. It could be used by overweight and/or obese people.
Increasingly, you hear stories suggesting that aspartame increases various health risks
(Czarnecka et al., 2021).
To find out the truth about aspartame, a literature study was performed. Chapters 1 and 2 focus
on the research. Here the role of aspartame in insulin resistance, leaky gut, neurological
changes, and cancer is discussed. The conclusion reveals that dosage is very important with
aspartame. Literature does show that aspartame can cause symptoms but many studies have
been conducted on rats. If the acceptable daily intake (ADI) of aspartame is not exceeded, there
is no reason to assume that health problems will be developed because of aspartame. Further
research is needed to investigate the effects on humans.
There is a chance that people will make more "unhealthy" choices if they use sweeteners. This
is because they are compensating for the calories they are not taking in now with unhealthy
foods (Yan et al., 2020).
Chapters 3 to 5 focus on a qualitative study examining knowledge and opinions about aspartame
among healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 65. The substance aspartame is put in nearly
5,000 diet products and beverages (Jones et al., 2022). 72% sometimes use the sweetener
aspartame but 82% do not know why there is a warning about aspartame on packaging. 55%
think aspartame is responsible for health problems while literature does not confirm this.
