Introduction
Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, focuses on improving psychiatric issues and well-being (Walden Class Discussion, n.d). It is vital to know that psychotherapy also has a biological correlation. Some forms of psychotherapy, such as cognitive therapy, have been found to impact neurotransmitter systems in the brain, influencing serotonin levels involved in mood regulation (Wheeler, 2020).
Does Psychotherapy Has a Biological Basis
Psychotherapy is as effective as using psychiatric drugs in improving mental health disorders. (PubMed, 2019). Some research studies indicate that psychotherapy has some biological basis (PubMed, 2019). For example, a study on bipolar disorder showed that the involvement of intracellular calcium signaling and genetic factors supports the idea that psychotherapy has a biological influence (PubMed, 2019). Additionally, research conducted on antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs and their role in serotonin and dopamine help to understand the biological involvement of psychotherapy (PubMed, 2019).
