Mr Birling: “Unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable”- Could be talking about himself,
obvious Titanic, egotistical, thinks he can do whatever and get away with it.
“I’m a hard-headed, practical man of business… there isn’t a chance
of war”- Not the smartest, calls himself hard-headed, insults himself but uses it as a
compliment.
“Community and all that nonsense”- Only because upper, very selfish
views, only care for family and no one else.
Mrs Birling: ”Girls of that class”- looks down on those struggling because they are
better off, very cruel and demeaning.
“one of the things that prejudiced me against her case.”- Uses
prejudice which shows she targeted her, felt against her because made a mistake
and lower class- wrong job for her.
“But I think she had only herself to blame”- blames victims instead of
selfish people like herself who wont help.
Sheila: ”But these girls aren’t cheap labour – they’re people.”- Sheila begins to
change, shows that she feels the opposite of parents ' views, possibly oppressed?
“The point is, you don’t seem to have learnt anything.”- Only younger have
learnt, older are set in their ways, Gerald somewhere in between only because of
Sheila though.
“But that won’t bring Eva Smith back to life, will it?”- Anger, shows that she has
fully grown, knows why what they did was wrong.
“Why – you fool – he knows. Of course he knows. And I hate to think how
much he knows that we don’t know yet. You’ll see. You’ll see.'
“You’re forgetting one thing I still can’t forget. Everything we said had
happened really had happened. If it didn’t end tragically, then that’s lucky for us.
But it might have done.”
Eric: ”She was a good sport.”- Literally forced to, no say because female and lower
class.
“I was in that state when a chap easily turns nasty.”- Drunked (‘squiffy’), trying
to excuse actions; of this.
“You're not the kind of father a chap could go to when he’s in trouble.”- worst
thing to here, maybe family support wouldn’t have done horrific things to Eva.
