Tissues of the human body
There are three layers to the stomach there is the non-striated smooth muscle found it the
stomach wall, an inner lining of columnar epithelium which has goblet cells and the tissue that
connects the muscle and the lining is called areolar tissue.
The first tissue is the non-striated smooth muscle which is seen as skeletal muscles and cardiac
muscles is found in the outer layer of the stomach and found inside the walls of other hollow
organs like the intestine. Smooth muscle works without you realising it and are involved with
most of the ‘housekeeping’ jobs around your body. The function of the smooth muscle in the
stomach is to push food through the stomach to the anus through the intestines. The muscle
does this by contracting during digestion helping the food pass through the body by breaking
down the nutrients. This layer of the stomach creates and controls the movement. The layers of
muscle are found in different directions so that the stomach can contract vertically, horizontally
and diagonally. Smooth tissue can also change shape to enable bodily functions. (BBC 2014)

The next tissue is the columnar epithelium cells this type of tissue is found in the inner lining of
the intestine and the stomach the tissue is made up of uni-layered and skinny cells that coat the
digestive area and line most organs in the digestive system such as the stomach, small intestine
and the large intestine, they are usually very narrow and either a cuboid or cylinder shape. The
main functions of the tissue is to produce enzymes to help in digesting food or help absorb food
which has already been digested. Also, inside the stomach the columnar epithelium helps with
movement of mucus and produces mucus to help maintain the stomach tissues and protect the
large intestine, the small intestine and the stomach from the rough environment of the
stomach. (Wikipedia 2018)
