Topic: Antibiotic Resistance

Thesis Statement

Antibiotic resistance can be strongly influenced by the presence of viruses or negatively

impacting conditions and can even be the result of a virus’ impact on the body, as demonstrated

in the newest phenomenon of COVID-19.

Article #1: Will coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gave an impact on antimicrobial

resistance? By Dominque L. Monnet & Stephen Harbath.

Topic:

(Monique et al, 2020), pens an article discussing the impacts of the current coronavirus

impacting populations in Europe and the United States, and how multiple studies have shown

that not only do people have to deal with the virus itself, but with a host of different bacteria that

are multi-drug resistant. This article was written by two members of different European Infection

Disease Prevention and Control centers in order to inform and make aware of the situation

regarding COVID-19 that not only centers around the virus itself, but the unknown side effects

that come along with it, meant for both the public and health professionals alike in its easy

accessibility. The information is incredibly relevant to the subject of the case study because not

only does it discuss in detail how antibiotic resistance may occur in general, but also because it is

in tandem with the pandemic that is currently going on in the year 2021. The authors collected a

table of evidence discussing factors that may influence levels of antimicrobial resistance during

the pandemic, using resources from the World Health Organization as well as the European

Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The information in this article is credible.

The authors are both professionals in their fields in two different well known and respected

, scientific fields, and the article itself is peer reviewed and has been cited by other articles in the

US National Library of Medicine (PMC). There are no viewable biases.

Article #2: Antibiotic Resistance by Marianne Frieri, Krishan Kumar and Anthony Boutin.

Topic:

The article is written by Marianne Frieri, Krishan Kumar, Anthony Boutin. The article

describes the difficulty dealing with bacterial pathogens that are antimicrobial resistant and how

it poses challenges that are dealt with high mortality rates and high morbidity. The article goes

over how bacteria are becoming more difficult to treat and are essentially untreatable with

conventional antibiotics. It also explains the lack of treatments available and successful

preventative measures, there are also few newer antibiotics available. The very few new

antibiotics require the development of novel treatment options. The audience intended for this

article is the public and health officials. This article and its information is from a credible source

and relevant to the subject of the case study. As the authors of this article are professionals in

their field and have been peer reviewed there are no biases in this article from the authors. The

information given is relevant and goes into detail on what needs to be done to the growing issue.

The article was published in the Journal of Infection and Public Health in 2017.
