Definitional Argument: Tap Dancing Is Considered Music

Grand Canyon University

ENG-106: English Composition 2

Introduction

Would you like your tap-dancing performance to be considered music? Most people who

compose beautiful forms of art through musical expression want their work to be shown and

accepted as music. You spend a great amount of your time towards figuring out the most delicate

details so the perfect sound rings in peoples ears as you are on stage. You study the music that is

given to you in depth only to be told that you are not performing? Music is a very board term for

something that is so complex but defining it in a way to include the ever-simplest form helps to

answer this question. Though like said before, defining something so broad is difficult, but doing

so will help peruse the fact that tap dancing is considered music. Music requires different types

of sounds and rhythms that create an intentional composition of a melody, noise through the form

of wavelengths that compute to sound that can be heard, and being a form of artistic expression,

so tap dancing is classified as music.

Criteria One Paragraph

Before we can classify tap dancing as music, we have to define music itself. Different

types of sounds and rhythms that create an intentional composition of a melody are required to

be classified as music. Some people might argue that sounds and rhythms do not have to be

constructed in an intentional way. Although this is true, even if sounds or rhythms were

accidentally made there is a sense of intentional composition to continually play that certain

, melody persistently. The overall structure of music has an organization ranging from different

levels, thus supporting the “traditional [aspect of] music theory” (Dai, Zhang, and Dannenberg,

2020 pg.8). According to Dai, there are certain levels of structure that then compose into a

melody which is formed by different cord transitions (sound) which compute to a rhythm (Dai,

etal. pg. 6). In other words, music is formed through multiple different cords of sound that sum to

be music. Sound and rhythm form through said cord to create a composition of many different

sounds forming together, or a melody. This melody is repeated through the song to cultivate the

audience into what is being performed. Without this intentional composition of sounds and

rhythms there wouldn’t be a backbone in music. Music must be defined as an intentional

composition of different sounds and rhythms to create a melody, because without these structural

items there would be no start to music.

Criteria Two Paragraph

Not only does music need to be defined by the composition of sounds and rhythms it also

needs to be defined by sound wavelengths. Noise through the form of wavelengths that compute

to sound that can be heard is required for the definition of music. Though there are many

different wavelengths that are prevalent throughout our everyday lives, sound wavelengths are

just as important. One might argue that sound wavelengths don’t compute to music, for they

compute to different things like car horns, elevator buttons, clicking, etc. But according to

Latchana, “Wavelength is a measure from one wave’s high point to the next. How many

wavelengths pass in a certain amount of time is a sound’s frequency” (Latchana, 2016,

p.16). Thus, explaining that different frequency’s create sound through wavelengths, this

frequency is measured through a wave’s high point to the next high point. At this highpoint

sound energy waves have to move away from their source at a certain speed and to be heard

“these waves must move through a medium made of matter” (Latchana, 2016, p.10). These
