Some say that it is almost impossible to rehabilitate an offender and make them into a
productive citizen within the confines of a prison. Yet evidence-based practices are emerging that
prove this can be accomplished. In this paper we will be discussing about the current techniques
prisons use going based off of research and will be adding two additional ideas to help
accomplish rehabilitation within the prison to treat mental illness, addiction, lack of education,
and other problems within the prison system. Also, will be developing methods of rehabilitation
that could accomplish within a prison with resources from the community for non-violent
offenders.
According to the Statesville Corrections facility in the state of Illinois the current
techniques that are used to treat mental illness, addiction, lack of education, and other problems
within the prison system that they use include mental health psychiatric services. The services
offenders can get is mental health professional where offenders in need of psychological care for
mental conditions, apprehension, drug addiction, and behavior problems. For offenders who need
psychiatric help they are prescribed to psychotropic medication and/or in need of a psychiatric
evaluation are seen by the psychiatrist every month or as indicated. For offenders that are
experiencing psychological crises then they are able to get a crisis intervention by getting a
screening and evaluation. For offenders that have been convicted as guilty but mentally ill on a
30-day basis can get an evaluation of GMI. Lastly, for offenders that have been sexual assaulted
can receive therapy, assessment and intervention, to assist them in recovering and to maintain a
program for prevention of sexual assaults this is called sexual assault intervention and
prevention.
