Unit 8: Evaluating the recruitment and selection process of a large business

Today I will be exploring the recruitment process of Wetherspoons and
concluding to what makes it so successful. Wetherspoon’s is a pub
company based in the UK. Founded in 1979 by Tim Martin. The
company operates around 900 pubs and has more than 37000 staff
members.
P1: Explain how a large business recruits and selects giving reasons for their processes

Businesses may need to recruit for a range of different reasons. This may be because a staff
member has left or due to business growth more help is needed.
Businesses need to think about short- and long-term needs. They do this by reviewing what
skills of employees have right now and will need to think if this may change in the future.
For example, technology has had a huge impact on businesses and has made a huge
difference to ways businesses like Wetherspoons recruit staff and has changed job roles
tremendously. There are many different reasons why businesses may need to recruit staff
and it depends on the type of business. For hospitality it would differ compared to retail or
promotion company.
Businesses must have an accurate job analysis system in order to recruit the correct people.
They state tasks included in the job and all difficulty, impact of errors and skills needed. Job
analysis helps Wetherspoons to create an accurate job description and person specification
(this usually states essentials and desirables) so that the business has an advantage of
recruiting the perfect match for the displayed job role.
This can be seen within Wetherspoons as their company is expanding very quickly, lots of
pubs are appearing at fast rates. This results in a demand for staff to fill vacancies.
It is extremely important that businesses recruit the right staff especially for pubs like
Wetherspoons who heavily rely on good customer service and positive experiences for
consumers. Having the right staff will lead to more sales which will eventually lead to more
profit. It is also vital that businesses ensure they treat staff in a positive way as it will reflect
on the business. This ensures the business has a good reputation, positive experiences and
increases productivity. This will all lead to business success.
Wetherspoons have a page on their company
website regarding employment. This is an
effective way for them to hire new staff as it is
easy to find and is attractive to potential
candidates as it lists all the perks of working with
the company.
The layout of the website is also very important
as you can see above, it’s easy to navigate and
attractive to people looking for work.

, Unit 8: Evaluating the recruitment and selection process of a large business

Wetherspoons have four main job roles to choose from. Associates (this includes bar staff,
kitchen staff, floor staff, cleaners, hotel housekeepers and hotel receptionists). Managers,
pub managers and head-office team members.
This shows potential employees that there is a vast range of jobs and skills to choose from
meaning the opportunities are open to anyone from no experience to more advanced
employees and the business is also very open about the first time experience you could gain
with them.
These job roles are also advertised with benefits of the job…
‘Our associates are hourly paid and receive their pay weekly. Look here at their other great
benefits.’

‘Our managers are salaried and receive their pay monthly. Take a look here at their other
great benefits.’

‘Our pub managers are salaried and receive their pay monthly. Take a look here at their
other great benefits.’

‘Our head-office team members are salaried and receive their pay monthly. Take a look here
at their other great benefits.’
