Softball and baseball, sports that I think should ring a bell when spoken about.
But in too many cases it doesn’t. which I think is very sad, because these sports
changed my life forever. They are so thought out that it is almost too difficult to
understand as an outsider. But why are they so difficult? How did they develop?
And most importantly, why don’t they get the recognition that they deserve? * I am
going to discuss this and hopefully make it a little bit clearer.

History and development of softball and baseball
Many people think that softball and baseball is the same, but they would be
mistaken. Although I get where their coming from because it has descended from
the same sport, namely Rounders. Rounders was a very popular sport from 1744
to 1789 but is still played in some parts of England. Now it is normally used as a
fun activity to play with your family on special events. Although baseball and
softball were both descendants of rounders, they do not have a lot in common.
Well, it looks the same, but I can assure you that it’s not. The games have
changed a lot since then.
The beginning of baseball and softball as we now know it was in 1887 when a
reporter for the Chicago board of trade called George Hancock thought of it. he
stood up, rolled up a boxing glove and broke a broom to make a bat, chalked a
diamond shape on the ground and yelled: ‘play ball!’ to a crowd who was waiting
for an American football game to start. Luckily, they reacted really impressed and
they all wanted to join. otherwise, this essay would’ve never been written ;) soon
after this moment Hancock was talking to one of his mates and started up a ‘new’
sport called indoor baseball, it got its own league and the people loved it! except
for the women, they were always told they were too ‘soft’ for the game, so they
started believing it. in my opinion that is kind of sexist, women can do things good
and some things even better than men. But these people didn’t think so. This was
the beginning of the separation of baseball and softball. Mister Abner Doubleday
took over the baseball (which was ‘the boy sport’) and mister Hancock took
softball over. He called it softball because it was still played with soft balls for the
safety of the women (which I think is sexist), but that is not the case with the
softballs from nowadays. Some would even say that the softballs from today, are
even harder than the baseballs from nowadays. (They would be right, trust me I
got hit multiple times by both) From then on, softball and baseball were two
different sports. Baseball became America’s main sport as they called it, and
softball stayed in its shadow.
