A financial center is an area where there is a high concentration of financial institutions. The area may be a city, county,
or somewhere larger. Financial centers have the best commercial and communications infrastructure where people
conduct huge volumes of international and domestic trading transactions (= binnenlandse handelstransacties.)

Asia are coming together.
Hong Kong: until 1995 they were part of the British Empire. That means
they could speak English and Chinees and that’s great news.

1. NYSE on Wall Street: traditional companies
There is a girl in front of the NYSE-building. She’s called the ‘fearless
girl’. It is complained. It means that she want to say that there is a
problem in the financial world. Namely, that is a male world. The
glass around her means ‘glass ceiling’ so woman can look at the
heigh positions but never reach it.
2. NASDAQ on Times Square: a lot of tech companies
On a stock exchange you can buy securities, such as shares
(issued by companies); bonds (issued by companies or
governments) etc.

The building is called 30 St Mary Axe, also known as the ‘Gherkin’ named after ‘augurk’. It is
situated in de city of London.
1. LSE (London Stock Exchange) is an international stock exchange with major British as well
as international companies listed. The exchange is part of the publicly traded London Stock
Exchange Group.

2. FTSE 100 (the Financial Times Stock Exchange): a gauge of prosperity (= welvaart) for businesses (= een maatstaf van

London, where you can find a lot of companies.
This part of the city is also known as The Square Mile. (For

London itself is the most visited part of the city for shopping etc.

3. Bank of England (National bank): a national bank will control
information, print….., controls the local banks so they are save and lastly
they are resilient (= sterk, veerkrachtig, weerbaar)
One of the bank's main roles is
1) to make sure that people in the UK can pay for things easily and
safely. That's why the bank
2) produces banknotes (cash) and oversees many of the other payment systems people use (for example, debit or
credit cards).
3) They also do everything they can to keep the cost of living stable so that money retains its purchasing power.
One way they do this is by changing the main interest rate in the UK. And they
4) Regulate UK banks and other financial companies, so people know they are safe and sound.
4. Primary insurance and reinsurance (around Lloyd’s of
London) → City of London
Lloyd’s of London is a market for insurance. On the
one hand, there are the risk takers and on the other,
there are the customers who want a risk covered.
This is Luc Lyckx, he is the man who designed the euro.
The obverse of the coins, which is common to all euro countries,
was indeed designed by Luc Luyckx of the Royal Mint of Belgium.
The obverse shows the value of the coin and the map of Europe
with twelve stars.
