Types of maltreatment:
Physical abuse
Physical indicators of abuse may include:
The child or young person being underweight
Children in primary education are often weighed and measured, this is procedural, the child may
require additional checks if their weight does not improve. The child’s family may be investigated to
make sure that the child is receiving a balanced diet.
The child or young person complaining of soreness
A child may be suffering from bruises of fractures if they complain often of soreness. It is common
for children to encounter some soreness, but it should be investigated if they complain frequently of
soreness.
Burns on the child or young person
Burns can lead to infections, and they may appear on a child due to abusive situations. The burn
could be caused by a cigarette, but it should be treated professionally.
Bruising on the child or young person
Children develop bruises if they are active, however, the child may be getting abused if they have
severe bruising. This may lead to organ damage or bone fractures. This could be fatal if the beatings
persist.
The child or young person failing to thrive
Education professionals may wish to investigate the child and their family life if they fail to display
the norms of development.
Emotional abuse
Emotional indicators of abuse may include:
Threatening behaviour
Children and young people may have low self-confidence if they are exposed to threatening
behaviour. They may see this behaviour at home or in school. The child’s behaviour will change, so
educational professionals should identify this.
Verbal abuse
A child may display behaviours that withdraw them from social situations. This may be due to the
child being exposed to somebody shouting, belittling and undermining them.
Constant shouting
A child may be less likely to engage in any conversation if they are exposed to constant shouting.
Their self-esteem will also be effected if they are constantly shouted at.
Belittling and undermining
If a child is regularly belittled or undermined, they may become less likely to want to experience new
things. This may be due to them having low self-esteem, as well as being withdrawn from social
interactions.
