History Source Based Essay: How To and example Essay.
Introduction:
- Stance – To a greater extent.
- Focus
- Signpost paragraph topics
- Counter Argument must be included – However, to a lesser extent.
- DO NOT INCLUDE SOURCE REFRENCES.
Example:
To a large extent, the Women’s Rights movement in the United States during the
period of the 1960’s to 1970’s was successful. The Women’s movement was
successful in ensuring legislative rights and protection to women, encouraging
support and its influence in establishments to promote equal rights. However, to a
lesser degree the movement did not have full support from African American and
conservative woman and had minimal legislative success.
Counter Argument:
- MUST HAVE!!
- first paragraph.
- Begin with: To a lesser extent…………………..
- End with: However ,despite this… Link back to Stance
Example:
To a lesser degree, the Women’s Rights movement had limited success in the period
of the 1960’s-1970’s due to exclusion of all woman oppression and minimal
legislative success. The implementation of abortion rights did not address “the cost
of an abortion which was high enough to be out of reach for many woman” (A). This
suggests that it was not a complete legislative achievement, as it did not help woman
financially to afford an abortion. Moreover, the support and movement neglected the
“experiences of African American woman of all classes and working-class woman
across all racial groups” (C). The lack of racial diversity shows the movements’
limited success. In addition to this, the movement did not have a large influence as
“STOPERA activists” (D) thought it was wrong. Moreover, equal rights exposed
woman to the “likelihood of having to draft” (G). This evidence suggests that the
exclusion of all women, minimal legislative success and the opposition to the
movement caused it to have limited success. However, despite this the movement
was still largely successful.
Paragraphs:
- Every Paragraph must begin with a thesis statement, to support the stance
and link to the topic. “To a large extent…”
- Include and address extent in opening line.
- The opening line must direct the paragraphs’ theme .

, - Every Paragraph must conclude with a thesis statement, to support the
stance.
- Explain the evidence given. “This suggests….”. DON’T just paraphrase.
- Include more than one source per paragraph!
- Use linking words throughout the paragraph.

Referencing the Sources:
- Refer to the sources by letter after each use thereof.
- Put the source letter in brackets at the end of the sentence.
- Do not refer to sources in the opening and closing lines.
- Every Source must be used at least once.
- Do not reference more than one source at a time.

Examples:
A large area of the woman's right movement success between 1960 to 1970s is seen
in the support and morale it created. The movement was a “solidarity” (A) and
“served as a powerful symbolic gesture” (A). This suggests that the movement
helped inspire women to participate in creating an equal society. Establishments
were created to motivate participation and morale thus is seen in the establishment
of ‘NOW’ which symbolized “a positive shift in the widespread, pre-existing
patriarchal attitudes” (C). In addition to this, women's participation in the movement
“exposed social problems created by such roles on women” (E). This exposure
helped create a successful drive for change. Members and participation in the
movement “were invigorated by these successes” (H). The evidence shown
therefore shows the movements success in empowering women in participating and
creating morale between 1960 - 1970s.

Legislative Rights are another aspect of the woman's rights movement’s large
success between 1960s to the 1970s. A major success was “president JF Kennedy
signing the landmark equal pay act in 1963” (B). In addition to this in 1973 the “US
Supreme Court legalized abortion in all 50 states” (A). This shows the success as
legislation is protecting women's rights. The women's rights movement also had a
passage in the Title deed in 1972, which “forbade sex discrimination in any
education program that required federal financial assistance” (A). Thus, the
legislative rights gained by the woman's right movement between the 1960s to the
1970s clearly demonstrates the success gained.

Furthermore, the creation of new establishments and opportunities to women in the
1960s to 1970s due to the woman's raft movement highlights their success. This is
shown by the release of a magazine, ‘Ms’ in 1972, which was the “first publication
empire to be created, owned and operated entirely by women” (F). Therefore, the
