‘How They Brought The Good News From Ghent To Aix’ by RobertBrowning tells the grave tale of three soldiers and the task undertaken
by them - to deliver very important news from Ghent to Aix. Browning
does not specify the message they were carrying; all we know is that
the news is going to save Aix from ‘a terrible fate’. The “How” of the
journey is more important than the good news. The excitement of the
journey and the sheer resilience of Roland the horse are the most
important parts of the poem. They may not have made their way into
history - for certain the horses won’t - yet it was something great they
did.
In the first stanza we learn that there are three characters - the
speaker, Joris and Dirck. They are leaving from the postern (the side
gate) and the watchman bids them goodbye and wishes they have a
good, fast journey as the gate bolts are undone. As the postern
closes, the light fades away and they gallop into the night.
They do not say a word to each other and keep up the pace -
galloping straight ahead in the same formation. The narrator turned in
his saddle and adjusted various straps; and throughout Roland kept
steadily galloping.
When they started their journey, the moon was setting in the sky. As
they drew near Lokeren, they could hear the roosters and twilight -
indicating that dawn was slowly approaching. At Boom, they could see
the sun come out over the horizon. At Dffeld, they could spot the
evening star (Venus) in the sky. As they reached Mecheln, they could
hear the church bells - here, Joris broke the silence and said ‘Yet
there is time!’
At Aershot, they could see the sun up in the sky - and against the sun,
the cattle stood, appearing black. They stared through the mist at the
