P1Explain the features of two contrasting
businesses
The businesses I have chosen are Tesla and Oxfam. Tesla is a public limited company that has over
50,000 employees to design and manufacture electric vehicles, batteries and energy storage systems.
Tesla is the world leading company in producing electric vehicles. Tesla is an international company that
works in the secondary and tertiary sectors (as Tesla manufactures and sells their product). Tesla's vision
is to “create the most compelling car company of the 21st century by driving the world's transition to
electric vehicles,”. Oxfam on the other hand is a non-profit organization, whose sole purpose is to
eradicate poverty and injustice by battling inequality. Oxfam has 50,000 employees and works in the
quaternary sector, and they operate worldwide, meaning that they are an international company.
P2 Explain how two contrasting businesses are
influenced by stakeholders.
Stakeholders are people that are interested in the business and influence decisions made by the
business
The main internal stakeholders of Tesla are the employees, board members and the CEO. The CEO and
board members influence the day-to-day actions of the business. The employees are important and
influential to Tesla as they influence the productivity and performance of the products sold by tesla.
Tesla looks at very specific skills when employing new workers, as they must be able to work at the pace
that was intended for them to work at. We have discussed before that Tesla plan to lead in the world's
transition to electric vehicles which means that they need to have a team that is properly equipped with
the write skill sets that will help achieve this aim. The main external stakeholders of Tesla are the
shareholders, customers and governments. The most important stakeholder when Tesla started out
were the shareholders/investors, as Tesla needed the funds to help finance its projects and ideas. To
this day Tesla still makes it one of their top priorities to satisfy their stakeholders. The government is
another influential stakeholder. The laws released concerning the manufacturing and production of
electric vehicles will affect the way that Tesla moves forward with production. Tesla has expanded its
base of operation to many countries worldwide, meaning that depending on the country there will be
laws and regulations that will cause Tesla to change or adjust something concerning the production and
selling of their products. Now arguably one of the most important stakeholders is the customers.
, Customers influenced Tesla so much that they decided to stop purchasing batteries from Panasonic and
they started to manufacture their own batteries so that they could sell their products at a more
affordable price.
The main internal stakeholders of Oxfam are the board of directors, the executive board, staff and
volunteers. The board of directors and the executive board are in control of Oxfam, both working
together to help and fulfil their goal to end world poverty. The volunteers are very important to Oxfam
as they provide their services for free, which means that Oxfam will end up with more money to carry
out its objectives. The main external stakeholders are the donors, supporters, suppliers, governments
and the general public. Oxfam engages with communities where poverty is common, and they use their
money and resources to help and rebuild societies and communities. The donors and supporters play a
major role in Oxfam’s mission as they provide financial support that allows Oxfam to achieve its goals.
Oxfam also engages with local partners such as local shops, schools and churches to organize fundraisers
to finance their mission. The government is a major influence on Oxfam as Oxfam receives donations
and grants from the government, however government laws can influence the amount that the charity
can receive. For example, in 2018 there was a law that may have cost Oxfam £29million in European
funding and from the UK department because of its handling of a scandal in Hait and Chad.
P3 Explore the organization structures, aims and
objectives of two contrasting businesses
Tesla has a functional organizational structure with aspects of a hierarchal structure which means that
they have one group of employees structured around sales and another around engineering. The
advantage of this structure is that it has a clear chain of command which allows for clear communication
and efficient workflow. It also allows for specialization, this means that business can have specific people
working in specific departments, allowing for organizations to concentrate on specific skill sets and
resources to achieve maximum efficiency. However, the disadvantage is that sometimes it can bring
division in the business as it can cause the different departments to compete, which can influence the
decision that each department makes. Tesla’s objective is to “Create the most compelling car company
of the 21st century while driving the world’s transition to electric vehicles.”. And its aim is “To accelerate
the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”.
Oxfam has a tall organizational structure. They also operate with a matrix structure as they are a
multinational company. They also have a hierarchical structure, this layout groups people in levels of
importance and ranks them in levels of relevance. Taking out levels of hierarchy creates a flatter
organization. Oxfam’s aim is to “create a just world without poverty. We want a world where people are
valued and treated equally, enjoy their rights as full citizens, and can influence decisions affecting their
