Assignment 1 Semester 1 2024
Unique Number:
Due Date: March 2024
QUESTION 1 (2 ANSWERS PROVIDED)
The English language has undergone significant evolution from its Old English origins to the
modern form spoken today. Its history can broadly be broken down into three main periods:
Old English (c. 450–1066), Middle English (c. 1066–1500), and Modern English (c. 1500 to
the present).
Old English emerged as Germanic tribes, namely the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, invaded
and settled in Britain during the 5th century. The language they brought was a collection of
closely related dialects. Old English was heavily inflected, using a range of endings for case,
gender, and number, much of which has been streamlined in the current language.
