1. INTRODUCTION
Dear Student
I hope you are coping well with this module. In Tutorial Letter 101, you have been advised
to use this tutorial letter (102) frequently to acquire the necessary skills to complete this
module. I would like to reiterate that this module is technical and requires frequent
practice. I urge you to read this tutorial letter carefully and to keep it at hand when
working through other study material, preparing the assignments, preparing for the
examination and making consultation with me.
2. PURPOSE OF TUTORIAL LETTER
The purpose of tutorial letter 102 (workbook) is to provide additional exercises in practical
cataloguing and classification. These exercises may be regarded as preparatory work
for the assignments and examinations. Completing these exercises will provide you with
the skills that are required to successfully complete this module.
3. CATALOGUING: INTRODUCTION
3.1 WHERE TO START
Before attempting any descriptive cataloguing, take note of the following:
• Study units 7 to 11 in the study guide form the basis of your introduction to
practical cataloguing.
• You need not memorise any of this information, but you must gain a general
overview. The study guide is an important source of information.
• Examine AACR2R itself. Study the general list of contents in order to know
which types of rules appear in which chapter.
• Proper use of the index to AACR2R can save you time and effort. This implies
that you must become familiar with cataloguing terminology.
• Thoroughly study the elements requested for a second level description as well
as which elements belong to which area (AACR2R rule 1.0D2).
• Do not forget to study the rules referred to in the study guide. Do not memorise
those rules, but you must understand each rule and its application.
• Always keep the objectives and functions of the catalogue in mind (paragraph
7.2 in the Study Guide)
