, 4. DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DISCOVERY OF TUTANKHAMUN’S TOMB. WHO
MADE THE DISCOVERY? WHAT WAS FOUND INSIDE THE FAMOUS GRAVE OF THE
PHARAOH?
Where is it situated?
- In The Valley of the Kings, one of the largest cemeteries in the world, near Luxor
- More than 65 pharaohs from the Ancient Egyptian Empire are buried here, including
Tutankhamun
Who made the discovery?
- Howard Carter, an archaeologist, discovered the tomb in 1922
What was found inside the famous grave of the Pharaoh?
- Inside the first coffin, there’s a second coffin that is even more beautiful. It has decorations
of iridescent blue, green and red glass inlay.
- Inside the second coffin, there’s a third coffin. This one is special because the first two coffins
were made of wood covered with gold and the third coffin is made of solid gold.
- They needed 8 man to lift the lid of the third coffin. Inside you can find Tutankhamun’s
mummy covered in jewels and crowned with an exquisite mask of solid gold, glass and
precious stones. No one had ever seen this before, a pharaoh laid exactly as he had been by
the priests 3500 years ago.
- The tomb was quite small because Tutankhamun was approximately 19 years old when he
was buried. It was quickly assembled for the untimely death of a young man
Why was this discovery so important?
- This was a very highly emotional moment in Egypt. The discovery was used as a reassertion
of the Egyptian identity and a proof of them being the descendants of the ancient Egyptians,
which means that they’re not supposed to be ruled by any foreigners.
