a. Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items which would need to be
concept checked, show how you would elicit, explain and concept check
each of the three items.
1. Planning
Teacher: Class, Can anyone tell me what they deciding to do this Summer holidays?
Well my friends and I are deciding to go to Spain for a week or so. This involves making
a lot of plans and preparations. Can anyone tell me what’s the word?
Student: Planning?
Teacher: Excellent Sam, it involves making plans for something. Therefore, I am …...?
Student: Planning a trip to Spain.
Teacher: Yes, good job everyone! I am planning to go to Spain this summer holidays.
What are your plans during the holidays?
Student: I am going to my eldest sister’s house in India.
Teacher: WOW! That great Joelene.
Student: I am going to the beach and the amusement park with my friends.
Teacher: That’s lovely, kyle. So…planning involves making plans for something.
Teacher: Let’s look at the pronunciation. Let’s say it together class …. ˈplanɪŋ
And again…… ˈplanɪŋ
Now how many syllables are there?
Student: 2 syllables.
Teacher: That’s great! And where is the stress?
Student: In the first syllable, Plan.
Teacher: Excellent Zach, everyone say PLANing.
Student: PLANing!
Teacher: Once more, planning.
Student: Planning.
Teacher: Good job class!
Theory:
Firstly, I will explain the definition of the word ‘planning’ to the class. Planning is a
process of making plans for something.
Secondly, I will start by explaining the word in the context: I will explain to the class how
travellers like Summer Avery’s parents liked planning festivals. Many people travelled
from one music festival to another in lorries and buses as well. In 1985, Lucy and Dave
, (Summer’s parents) joined the peace convoys caused they wanted to escape
unemployment and travel. The Stongehenge free festival was a British free festival from
1974 to 1984 held at Stongehenge during the month of June. This festival was a
celebration of various alternative cultures. Sam can you tell me what the people
travelled with? Sam responses to the question asked.
Then I will illustrate the form and pronunciation of the word: ‘Planning is noun and the
pronunciation is /’planɪŋ/ with 2 syllables.’ Now I will explain to the learners some other
points to keep in mind: ‘Planning have different meanings in different context. In this
case, I will illustrate how to change a verb from the present tense, which means that it
is happening right now or in the present.’ For example, ‘’I walk’’ to the past tense or
what already happened is ‘’I walked.’’ The same goes for plan, planned, planning.
To check students understanding I will ask them the following concept questions (The
TEFL Academy, Unit 2) where they will need to answer with a YES/NO?
1. Is Summer Solstice a free festival? YES
2. Was this festival held in Yorkshire? NO
3. Did Summer’s parents join the peace convoys to escape unemployment? YES
I will use the eliciting technique (The TEFL Academy, Unit 2) to give feedback on those
concept questions and ask the whole class if they can give me the past and present
tense of the word ‘planning.’ The answer I would be expecting is planned and plan.
‘’Okay class, can you repeat after me: plan, planned, planning” (Class repeats). Once
more what are the tenses of these words? ‘’Class responses: past, present, future
tenses’’. Lastly, I will ask the whole class to write down the new word ‘planning’ in the
back of their exercise books.
Now let’s look at the word Alternative…
