1.2 Discuss the concept of energy transformation, giving examples of how one
form of energy can be converted into another. (4)
1.1 Forms of Energy
1. Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by an object due to its motion. The faster an
object moves, the more kinetic energy it has.
• Example: A moving car on the highway has kinetic energy because of its
velocity.
2. Potential Energy
Potential energy is the stored energy an object has because of its position or state.
It is often associated with objects that can fall or return to a lower state.
• Example: A rock at the edge of a cliff has gravitational potential energy due
to its elevated position.
, 3. Thermal Energy (Heat Energy)
Thermal energy is the internal energy in a substance due to the movement of its
particles. The faster the particles move, the higher the thermal energy.
• Example: Boiling water on a stove has thermal energy because of the fast-
moving molecules of water.
4. Chemical Energy
Chemical energy is the potential energy stored in the chemical bonds of molecules.
When these bonds are broken during a reaction, the stored energy is released.
• Example: Batteries store chemical energy, which is converted into electrical
energy when used in devices.
5. Electrical Energy
Electrical energy is the energy of moving electric charges, typically electrons in a
conductor.
• Example: The electricity that powers home appliances like a television or
refrigerator is electrical energy.
6. Light Energy (Radiant Energy)
Light energy is a form of electromagnetic energy that travels in waves and can
move through a vacuum.
• Example: Sunlight is light energy that reaches Earth and powers
photosynthesis in plants.
7. Sound Energy
Sound energy is the energy carried by sound waves through a medium like air,
water, or solids. It is produced by vibrations.
