Chapter Eighteen – Completing and Presenting the Research

Learning objectives:
At the end of this chapter, the student should be able to:
• Conceptualize and present conclusions from research.
• Conceptualize and present recommendations for research projects.
• Complete the final written report of a research project.
• Present the research.

Research skills:
At the end of this chapter, the student should, using the exercises on the
companion website, be able to:
• Explain what a conclusion is in a research project, and what conclusions
represent in terms of the research endeavour.
• Explain how good and useful recommendations are conceptualized and
presented.
• Critique the conclusions and recommendations from a given research
project.

Chapter Summary:
The aim of this chapter is to explain the importance of the written report of the
research project. To explain the concept of conclusions in research, to
demonstrate how conclusions should be drawn, and to help you, the student,
develop the skills needed to complete the write-up of a thesis/dissertation. The
means by which the research project is brought full circle is demonstrated in this
chapter by explaining how the final conclusions of the research project respond
to the research question or statement of the research project and how they
respond to the aim and the objectives of the research. The chapter explains how
the final chapter of the thesis/dissertation, or the final section of the research
report, is designed to answer fully and completely the research question/research
statement.

The first textbox in the chapter, The Value of Good Research textbox which
details a survey of 1,000 teenagers published in the Guardian newspaper
provides a good and interesting example of the problems that can arise when

, research projects are presented without being thoroughly and precisely
communicated. This textbox could form the basis for a good class discussion on
the importance of thoroughly communicating the research project.

The focus of the chapter is on the final chapter in the thesis, or the final section of
the report of the research project, conclusions and recommendations.

The chapter explains what a conclusion is and how conclusions are drawn. The
process of moving from a finding to a conclusion, to a recommendation is
outlined and explained and examples are given. The examples are important
because they illustrate, very simply, this process. The process can seem very
difficult and very complex to beginner researcher, having the simple examples
presented in the textbook to use as a guide will help them develop an
understanding of the process, and the confidence to deal with this in their own
research.

The process of theorising conclusions is also explained in the chapter and again
examples are given. These examples should be used in class discussions with
students, to ensure that they understand these processes, to encourage them to
actively engage in learning about the processes, and to facilitate them in learning
how to engage in the processes themselves.

The chapter explains what is meant by the ‘implications’ of conclusions.

The recommendations of a study are explained and explored. Some guidelines
and standards are provided in terms of how recommendations should be
presented. The need, usually, to make separate recommendations for different
parties or constituents to the research is explained.

The research methodology in the study is life history research. This is a very
useful methodology, and it is sometimes overlooked in business research. In fact,
this research methodology has great application in social science research and in
business research. A number of very useful and very interesting resources in
relation to life history research are presented. It would be a very interesting class
exercise to spend some time on this box feature, and to explore using the
internet the resources provided.

A substantial amount of guidance is provided in terms of writing up the research
project. The guides provided are simply and clearly presented. It would be
important to spend some time in class working through the guides with students,
