CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS, SCHEDULES, AND
SPECIFICATIONS
construction drawings (working drawings) - Answers- one of the most important parts of
the contract documents
-describe, in detail, the extend of the work and the locations, dimensions, and
relationship of the various construction elements
-represent the interior designer's final decisions concerning design, building methods,
and construction technology
-must show the technically correct ways of meeting the functional requirements of the
design, such as constructing partitions, building architectural woodwork, distributing
electricity, providing safe finishes and satisfying thousands of other concerns
-used to build the project, they must clearly communicate the information to the
contractor, material suppliers, and other people involved with the project
-must be coordinated with the specifications and the consultant's drawings
-form part of the contract and are legal documents
-organized in a generally standardized sequence based on the normal sequence of
construction and through many years of use
-should show the general configuration, size, shape, and location of the components of
construction, with general notes to explain materials, construction requirements,
dimensions, and other graphic material

for a set of construction drawings produced and coordinated by the interior designer, the
drawings are usually organized in the following sequence: - Answers- 1-title and index
sheet
2-floor plans
3-reflected ceilings plans
4-elevations
5-details
6-mechanical drawings
7-electrical drawings
8-fire protection drawings
-if structural drawings are used, they are placed after the interior drawings and before
mechanical
-schedules usually located on sheet where they most logically apply (room finish
schedule and door schedule should be on same sheet at floor plan) assuming a
separate finish plan isn't used

title and index sheet - Answers- first sheet with the title and sometimes a graphic
identifying the project
-may contain an index to the set of drawings, a list of standard abbreviations and
symbols used on the job, project data required by the building department (sq. footage,
occupancy category, building type), and general notes that apply to the entire job

, floor plans - Answers- include demo, construction, finish, telephone and power, and
furniture

details - Answers- include construction elements such as wall types, doors, glazing,
ceilings, millwork, stairways, flooring and any other special construction
-how many there are depends on size and complexity of the project and whether the job
is being bid or negotiated

competitively bid - Answers- details must be very complete and fully describe the extent
of the work so the client will get a valid cost quote

fire protection drawings - Answers- when sprinkler system is required for commercial
construction, these plans must be completed by a mechanical engineer and are usually
included with the complete set of construction drawings

structural drawings - Answers- needed if work is being performed that requires the
services of a structural engineer
-if included, they are produced by structural engineer and placed after interior drawings
and before mechanical drawings

schedules - Answers- included in drawings
-locations of schedules may vary depending on size and procedures of individual offices
-generally located on the sheet where they most logically apply (ex. room and door
schedule should be on same sheet as floor plan)

numbering system - Answers- provides a logical way to organize and refer to the
drawings
-letters typically used are: A (architectural and interiors), E (electrical), FP (fire
protection), I (Interiors when separate series), M (mechanical), P (plumbing), and S
(structural)
-drawings can be grouped within each discipline for larger projects - group number
followed by decimal, then sequential numbers starting with "1" - this method allows
additional sheets to be added at the end of each group without disrupting numbers that
may already be assigned to detail reference bubbles and notes

numbering system for projects (large or small) in high rise building or large buildings
with different sections or buildings complexes - Answers- number is preceded with the
floor number or building section number
-ex. 54A1.3 would indicate a floor plan sheet in the architectural series of a project on
the 54th floor
-useful for building's owners and managers, and for design firms doing work in the same
building on several different floors

name the contents of construction drawings: - Answers- 1-floor plans
2-reflected ceiling plans
3-elevations
