Lecture 1: moral reasoning/utilitarianism

Ecological fallacy; je neemt een gemiddelde van mensen (bijvoorbeeld grootte van hersenen zijn groter bij mensen
met ADHD), maar er zijn ook mensen met ADHD die gemiddeld kleinere hersenen hebben. Dus je vindt gemiddelde
verschillen op grote groepen, maar dat zegt nog niks over het individu!
Fact/value distinction; Als je van een feit naar een waarde gaat, van fact → value. het feit zelf laat deze moraliteit
niet zien, je moet in het feit gaan om de waarde eruit te halen. We noemen het zelf een disorder. Je moet
onderscheid maken tussen wat een feit is en wat een value.
Voorbeeld: vrouwen hebben kleiner brein dan mannen. Betekent dit dat het een disorder is? Nee, het is een
observatie. Het feit zelf betekent niet dat je een disorder hebt.

Meta/normative/applied ethics

• Meta-ethics (meta-ethiek) biedt de basis voor het begrijpen van morele claims en waarden, en onderzoekt
de aard en fundamenten van ethische theorieën. Bijvoorbeeld: zijn morele waarden objectief of subjectief?
• Normative ethics (normatieve ethiek) bouwt voort op inzichten uit de meta-ethiek door theorieën en
principes te ontwikkelen die bepalen wat moreel juist of verkeerd is. Het biedt de basis voor het vormen van
morele richtlijnen en normen. Bijvoorbeeld: utilitarisme en natural law theory.
• Applied ethics (toegepaste ethiek) gebruikt de theorieën en principes uit de normatieve ethiek om concrete
morele vraagstukken en situaties te analyseren en op te lossen. Het brengt de abstracte theorieën en
principes in de praktijk. Bijvoorbeeld: het beoordelen van situaties met abortus.

In essentie begint de ethische analyse met meta-ethiek, die de fundamenten en aard van morele waarden
onderzoekt, waarna normatieve ethiek richtlijnen en principes ontwikkelt, en tenslotte wordt toegepaste ethiek
gebruikt om deze richtlijnen toe te passen op specifieke, praktische situaties.

Natural law theory stelt dat er universele morele wetten en waarden bestaan die kunnen worden ontdekt door de
menselijke rede door te kijken naar de natuur en de aard van de dingen.
Question = Is nature a good starting point to think about human morality? Je ziet soms dat dieren iets van
moraliteit hebben, maar… interessant punt!

Meta-ethical question: can we find moral norms for humans in nature? What are your thoughts/feelings/moral
intuitions? Homosexuality occurs in many species and is quite common.
- Yes, nature can be a helpful guide in determining what is right and wrong.
- No, nature is often cruel and hardly a standard for what is desired/good; Some species,
some animals, can do very bad things for another, like killing each
others baby’s, stealing each others eggs. It isn’t a good standard for
ethical norms

Binnen dit kader kan homoseksualiteit worden gezien als ‘tegen de natuur’
omdat het niet bijdraagt aan de voortplanting. De natural law theorie stelt
dat seksuele handelingen die niet gericht zijn op voortplanting niet in
overeenstemming zijn met de natuurlijke doeleinden van seksualiteit. Daarom wordt homoseksualiteit door
sommige aanhangers van de natural law theory als moreel onjuist beschouwd.

THE EUTYPHRO DILEMMA Plato, Philosopher. 427 – 347 (A.D). Greece
How does god know, what is right and what is wrong. Are things right or wrong, because God
commands them? Or does God command these rules, because they are right?
In the first case: God would be able to command the most cruel things, and they would be good
merely because he/she/they/it has said so?

,In the second case: These rules apparantly exist outside of god!! Goodness is there for us to discover, as much as it
is there for God to discover!!

Plato had dus het dilemma wat het eutyphro dilemma wordt genoemd. Het gaat over bovenstaande quote. Hoe
weet God wat goed en fout is? Is dat om de eerste reden dat God dat zelf kan bepalen. Dit betekent dus ook dat God
over de meest afschuwelijke dingen zou kunnen zeggen dat het ‘goed’ is… Erge dingen worden dan als goed
beschouwd, puur omdat God het zo heeft gezegd. De tweede optie is dat de regels over goed/fout buiten God
liggen. Wat goed is, is dus voor ons uitzoeken, maar dat is ook uitzoeken voor God. Deze regels liggen buiten ons en
worden niet door ons of God bepaald.
→ Zulke vragen worden ‘meta-ethical’ genoemd, omdat ze de nature of ethics bevragen

MORAL REASONING
The importance of reasoning in relation to Ethics – the curious case of ADHD.

In elke fase ben je bezig met moreal reasoning; moreel redeneren (morele beslissingen
maken over ethische vraagstukken)

Bronnen van ethics/scientific toolbox;
- Thought experiments (like the euthyphro dilemma); Thought experiments zijn hypothetische scenario’s die
worden gebruikt om ethische of filosofische vraagstukken te verkennen.
- Informal logic (like comparing sexual behavior in animals – an ‘analogy’.); je vergelijkt dus dingen met
elkaar; als Jantje in het water springt, spring jij er toch ook niet achteraan?
- Formal Logic; als je merkt dat de punten van een ander niet logisch zijn, maak je jezelf sterk. Formele
logica gebruikt gestructureerde en formele methoden om argumenten te evalueren op basis van geldigheid
en coherentie. Het richt zich op de structuur van argumenten en de relaties tussen premissen en conclusies
- Special moral arguments (like: universalization, fact-value distinction).
- Netflix. Beetje voor de grap. Maar je hebt veel films waarin mensen beslissingen moet maken

ADHD – a very rich case-study for ethics
- Many moral concerns; veel morele zorgen
- Long term effects of medication
- Inclusion/exclusion (in education); diversiteit
- Equality (in education); waarom vertellen we aan bepaalde mensen dat ze een disorder hebben en wie
beslist dat?
- Purpose of education (teaching maths/language or socialisation in a broader term). De 1 is misschien
drukker dan de ander, maar moet het schoolsysteem juist niet het kind socialiseren?

Generalizations: Franke/Hoogman paper (2017): ‘the data from our highly powered analysis confirm that patients
with ADHD do have altered brains and therefore that ADHD is a disorder of the brain. This message is clear for
clinicians to convey to parents and patients’

DSM-5 zegt; Inattention (6 or more out of 9 criteria) like:
- Often fails to to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork , at work, or
during other activities
- Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities (e.g., has difficulty remaining focused
during lectures, conversations, lengthy reading).
- Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the
workplace.
- Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (e.g.
schoolwork or homework (...)).
Hyperactivity, impulsivity (6 or more out of 9 criteria) like:
- Often leaves seat in situations when remaining seated is expected (e.g., leaves his or her place in the
classroom (...)).

Er wordt veel ‘often’ gebruikt en dat woord is erg subjectief. Dit maakt het fake criteria en alles is dus afhanke lijk
van de omgevingsfactoren. Punt 2 en 3 lopen ook nog erg in elkaar over. Logisch dat punt 3 niet lukt als je punt 2
hebt. Het is niet exact. Dus neem het niet te serieus.

Heterogeneity; Maar als je naar een case study kijkt, dan zie je wel een
statistische relatie; Gemiddeld gezien is het brein van mensen met ADHD
kleiner komt naar voren. Maar als nog ook veel heterogeniteit, dus het
zegt niet veel..

Hoe kan je formal logic nu gebruiken?

Premise = uitspraak/bewering.




In the premise (stelling) gaat het over een kleiner brein. Dit is niet perse een brain disorder. Dit is dus niet helemaal
goed. Dit heet een implied premise (impliciete stelling).

Er is een implied premise, veronderstelling/bewering nodig waarvan wordt aangenomen dat het waar is en die
ook nodig is om de conclusie te ondersteunen. Want de redenering die hierboven staat klopt nu nog niet.
Daarom voegen we een premise toe;
