Integrated Regenerative Design
Lesson 7 14/11
A. Circular city
We will look at the scale of the city, and the scale of the building.
1. No waste
HY-FI: zero carbon emissions, 10
thousand bricks made on site, CO2
neutral. He was using waste from
foodindustry, and het made an example to
show everyone that building circualr is
possible. He made a huge chimney > to
regulate the heat in localclimate.
Nature is a system without waste > the
building industry is working in a whole
other way = to earn money.
Waste is not new. THE HISTORICAL WASTE:
Amphorae trash pile (vases that were thrown away before)
o Rethink waste, it’s a system error
• The industry limits the lifespan of products.
• There is a new law where you need to follow rules for producing waste,
at least we are a little bit more aware, what we are doing with waste.
• You can find waste everywhere on our planet (91% is not circular)
• Around our planet is also so much waste (all the sattelites, so
dangerous)
• The construction industry is responsible for a significant amount of
waste globally. Construction creates an estimated third of the world’s
overall waste and at least 40% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.
• Also art shows us in the worls, how many waste there is for stuff we buy
(Ni Haifeng)
o Reduce and conserve
1
, • Change the system, we can reduce energy, water, food, goods etc. >
this immediatly changing the system.
• Few examples:
❖ STONECYCLING, now cycling, now front (master Delft)
❖ Demountable facade, reusable stones
❖ A windmill instead of a chimney
❖ ROTOR
❖ EEKLO second hand shop by EVR architecten
o Reclaim vacant buildings
o Reuse materials
2. Be part of the circular economy
Economy is not working in a circular way > as an architect: can i close the circle
o Close the circles
• Rethink your design, keep the resources in the city of your building.
• For example: coffe ground wadte, cork, etc.
o Stop property
• Take advantages of services, pay for the service not the device: rent
more stuff like cambio cars, rent washing machine, elevators, lightning
etc.
o Maintain, restore, take care
• Right to repair and proper maintenance. Everything we do, needs
maintenance. How can we maintain a certain building, and how is it the
easiest?
3. Use regenerative materials
For example hempcrete brick
o Use local materials
• Short chain promotion > less mobility, proximity, circular + local jobs
(BC materials, reusing the earth)
• CASESTUDY: building of RICOLA by herzog & de Meuron + Rauch
❖ This building is full of herbs, and
the different microclimate is very
important, it’s doing the job what is
needed.
❖ We look at the site and context of
the building: there is a river (valley)
so the soil is always different. Also in
Brussels you have the Zenne (the
underground is full of microelements. Making a building in a low
point is difficult > floods are possible, so we nood to check how
to solve this.
