Before one can understand cognitive psychology one has to know the things associated
with it. There are many factors that contributed to the study of cognitive psychology. This study
has sparked an interest in a lot of people and that lead the study of cognitive psychology. They

are: structuralism, functionalism, and behaviorism. Behaviorism come from a branch of
functionalism but is based on the study of behavior which is focused on behaviors that can be
observered. Cognitive psychology is defined as, “the branch of psychology concerned with
how people acquire, store, transform, use, and communicate information (Galotti K, 2014).” In
other words, “cognitive psychology deals with our mental life: what is going on inside our head
when we are perceive, think, speak, remember, categorize, reason and decide(Galotti K,
2014p.1).” This particular study is amazing because it opened up many door to the study of
cognitive psychology. Key milestones added to the development of cognitive psychology
this first is the information processing approach. “The information processing approach was very
dominating in the 1960’s and 1970’s and is still in effect today (Galotti K, 2014, Pg15).” This
observation is based on human cognition and computerized processing of information. In other
words this milestone is used to describe mental process and its relationship to computers. The
comparison is that the human mind is just like a computer because it gets information, stores it
and can use it at a later date. However, the information processing approach originated from
structuralism. “More beliefs were that human cognitive abilities can be thought of as systems of
interrelated capacities (Galotti K, 2014, Pg16).” Many different researchers began to use the
information processing theory to help study the concept of cognition, these blueprints and
observations let to a term called connectionism. “The name originated from models depicting
cognition as a network of connections among simple (and usually numerous) processing units
(Galotti K, 2014, Pg17).” It is said that the units are compared to neurons within the human
brain. Which lead to another milestone is, the connectionist approach. Another key
milestone to cognitive psychology is the evolution approach. This evolution basically stated that
humans have specialized areas of competence produced by our evolutionary heritage (Galotti K,
