Food is an essential resource to keep life sustained. Sometimes problems with
the digestive system can cause undesirable side effects from eating. One of these
disorders is Crohn’s Disease. Crohn’s can make everyday life a little more difficult
for the patient.
This disease typically affects the intestines of the digestive system. It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. However, any area of the digestive tract can be affected, from the mouth to the anus. It can cause inflammation, lesions, like ulcers, and possible abscesses along the affected area. Bowel obstructions can be possible if the scarring is bad enough. This can be very painful and can be life threatening for the patient.
It is a chronic disease and there is not a cure for it currently. Crohn’s Disease can be treated with medications that lessen the symptoms or can help put the patient into remission. Remission for this disease can be for any length of time. Patients will have flare-ups that can
vary in severity. If the treatments put the patient into remission for long enough, the affected area of the digestive tract can start healing. Patients who have a more severe case of Crohn’s may
need to have surgery to remove the damaged or necrotic parts of the intestines or to remove scar tissue that has caused a bowel obstruction.
Crohn’s symptoms can range depending on the severity of the disease. Some patients
can show very mild symptoms and remain asymptomatic for long periods of time and some patients can be severely affected by the symptoms. Common symptoms are abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and possible weight loss, that can lead to malnutrition. Mouth sores can also be a symptom. Patients with Crohn’s are at a higher risk for fistulas that can occur in between the intestinal walls. Anal fissures can be a symptom as well. Bloody stool can often be associated with this disease.
Flare-ups can occur after certain foods are eaten and the food gets stuck in the area of
the lesions and gets irritated. This can cause the patient to not want to eat for fear of pain and
causing another episode of flare-ups. They can have severe abdominal pain and vomiting along with diarrhea with these episodes. Certain medications that may be irritating to the stomach lining and digestive tract can cause more than normal abdominal pain in patients with Crohn’s Disease. For patients with more severe cases of Crohn’s, inflammation of skin, eyes and joints, inflammation of the liver or bile ducts, kidney stones, anemia, and possible delayed growth or sexual development, in children can occur also.
There are five types of Crohn’s Disease. The are named by the location of the affected area. The first one is ileocolitis. This is inflammation in the ileum and colon. Ileitis is the next type of Crohn’s. It is named due to the inflammation being in the ileum as well, but patients with this type of Crohn’s, have a higher risk of developing fistulas. Gastroduodenal Crohn’s disease gets its name because it affects the stomach and duodenum. Patients with this type may experience vomiting and may be more at risk for weight loss. Jejunoileitis affects the second
part of the small intestine called the jejunum. A common symptom for this type may be cramps after meals and fistulas. The last type is Crohn’s colitis. This type affects the colon. It causes fistulas, ulcers, and abscesses to form around the anus. Skin lesions, joint pain and
rectal bleeding can be caused by this type of Crohn’s.
Patients are typically between the ages of 15 to 35 years old when they are diagnosed. There is no one type of test that will diagnose Crohn’s. Typically, when a patient comes in displaying these symptoms, a series of lab tests and procedures can bring the
