Socially responsible companies use their position and resources for something more than
pleasing their shareholders and increasing their bottom line. To be sociably responsible, they
have a business ethic that focuses on social change, sharing its success with their local and global
communities. In our readings this week, it described corporate and social responsibility as
“continuing commitment by business to contribute to economic development while improving
the quality of life of the workforce and their families, as well as of the community and society at
large.” (Hammond, & Christensen, 2016)Companies face a multitude of issues. They have to be
profitable, be employee centric, and focus outward on their customers. When examining how a
company manages these relationships can be performed by their Corporate Social Responsibility
and Sustainability (CSR). CSR can be described as how a company takes actions to improve
social or environmental conditions (Hammond & Christenson, 2016). Microsoft is a company
that uses CSR to continuously improve their organization. Microsoft started to make a big
"corporate citizenship" push in the early 2000s following the q fallout from its antitrust trials,
and has since donated millions to non-profits, invested in programs for economic development,
and tightened up its internal reporting processes (Alves, 2015). Microsoft’s commitment is “We
believe that companies that can do more, should. That’s why we focus on four key areas inwhich
technology can and must benefit the future of humanity and our planet.” (Microsoft.com)
Microsoft’s displays their CSR with their work for justice ofcombatting modern slavery / human
trafficking and they show how having a strong CSR initiative canaffect all parties involved.
In recent events we have seen an uprise in the world’s human trafficking and slavery. The
counter for trafficking has increased in 2020. There was 108, 613 Individual Cases, 164
Countries of Exploitation, and 175 Nationalities. (IOM, 2020) Microsoft has been taking steps to
