Every Woman's Right.
I chose the "hot" topic, abortion. I think there are many different opinions about abortion in
our society. Abortion is a procedure performed with the purpose of terminating the pregnancy.
I am in favor of the idea of abortion. As I said, there are many opinions on this sensitive
subject. Some call it murder and a selfish decision. I am in favor because I believe that every
woman should be able to decide for herself if she wants to have an abortion or not.
In Belgium we have an abortion law since 1990. Before abortion was included in the penal code. In
2018 it was completely removed from the criminal code. So it is no longer punishable in Belgium.
The law also states that only the woman who is pregnant can make this decision, so
self-determination and I can totally agree with that, because it is your body, so your decision.
I also understand the people who are against abortion, because you are ending a life.
But I don't think people should then say it's their fault because they didn't use contraception, for
example. I've already said it, but I don't think other people should judge whether someone should
have an abortion or not. There are so many reasons why women have abortions and it has to do with
all different situations. So you can't consider someone a "murderer" when you don't know the
situation.
For example, a woman who has been raped. She already has a hard time surviving this
psychologically and if she is pregnant with a child that she does not want, then this is another
reminder of what happened. I think sometimes you have to put yourself in someone else's situation,
and then you have to ask yourself how you would handle it.
You would rather have a child by someone you love and not someone who raped you.
You may also get pregnant, even though you have used protection and if you live alone or in a poor
family and have no money to pay your rent, food, or water, it is also difficult to decide if you want to
keep the child, given the circumstances. You don’t want to be able to not provide your child with food,
a good roof, clothing, etc. You want the best for your child, but in some situations this is difficult.
You also have situations, where the parents wanted to have a child, but it is determined that the child
has a disease or handicap, where a qualitative life is not possible. Then you also have to think about
whether you have the money for the treatments and whether you want your child to live a life like that.
Because such a care also requires a lot of time and energy, and maybe the parents are not ready for
that yet
You always want the best for your child, but do you want to see your child suffer? That is the question
that often comes up.
There are still so many different situations where people consider having an abortion. About the
number of weeks, I agree that it can be done up to 12 weeks, but after that is a little too long and by
then the fetus is more developed. I think that if you really don't want the child, like if you have been
raped for example, that you know your answer quickly and for those who are not sure yet that 12
weeks is enough time to think about it. 18 weeks is too long in my opinion. Because after 18 weeks
the organs are already better developed, as well as the baby is already a lot bigger and then it also
has a wake-sleep rhythm.
