The purpose of this paper is to analyze a difficult leadership situation in the business world that has impacted a company or companies. It will develop a plan for positively increasing the performance of the organization, the leadership, and the teams within the organization using the five practices of exemplary leadership as developed by Kouzes and Posner.
Leadership in Hard Times
Latin writer Publilius Syrus once said, “Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm” (Pozin, 2014, p.1). When times get hard, leaders must find the audacity to display the character, actions, and skills necessary to lead their team out of the dark and into the light. During the COVID-19 Pandemic small business leaders have been faced with this challenge. Leaders must find ways to overcome these obstacles of hard times by developing plans that encourage and inspire their team. To overcome these challenges, leaders can use Kouzes and Posner’s “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model” which
are: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart (John Wiley & Sons Inc., 2021).
Impact of COVID-19 to Small Businesses
While large corporations such as Walmart, Target, and Johnson & Johnson may have the resources and capital to keep them afloat, small business owners are finding it harder and harder to survive without these same comforts. Between March 1 and June 15, 2020, Yelp reported 140,000 businesses on their site closed, with 40 percent of the closures being permanent (Kwak, 2020). This data only represents the early stages of the COVID-19 Pandemic. With the ongoing presence of the pandemic,
more and more small businesses will inevitably face the same doom.
Challenges Effecting Small Businesses
There are several challenges that have impacted small businesses in the United States and around the world. Mandatory shutdowns of businesses, social distancing (keeping six feet apart from one another), and the widespread panic of a deadly airborne virus from patrons and employees alike are a few examples. Furthermore, people have resorted to online shopping, and delivery rather than
visiting their local small businesses – See figure 1 (UNCTAD, 2020).

Developing a Plan using the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model
Small business leaders have been faced with a plethora of obstacles to overcome during the COVID-19 Pandemic. In order to survive, leaders must foster a culture in which relationships between leaders and willing followers can thrive (Thompson, 2012) . Kouzes and Posner’s “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model,” can be a guide for leaders to overcome these hard times as defined below.
