Radio Communication systems used by the UPS
Clansman
The clansman is a radio system that has been used a various public service forces, Army, Navy and
RAF; based primarily in land-based environments dating back to the 1970's.
It was a radio designed for soldiers that were operating in combat zones anywhere around the
world.
The system provides communication over long and short distances throughout different work units
within the army i.e. ground to air, armoured vehicles etc.
The radio was built with analogue technology with a limited data capacity.
At the time the clansman wasn't built at a suitable requirement to support the future military
information systems so it was replaced by digital tech, an example would include the Bowman
radio system.

Positives
• The radio was frequency synthesised, meaning it used switched channels instead of a
variable tuning scale.
• Has good communication range
• It's light weight
• Can be operated in all weather conditions
• Can be operated on the ground or in the sky
Disadvantages
• It has a 2.5m antenna which could be spotted easily by others
• Limited data capacity
• It's very hard to repair as most parts needed for it no longer exist

Ptarmigan
This communication system was used by the army in the 1980s, however after many upgrades it
has only it's been replaced by a new system called the Bowman.
It was a mobile, battlefield communication system that used digital microwave technology which
Provided secure communications networks over a large area, it provided communication in a rage
of formats voice, data, telegraph and so on.
It was also used to provide global communication links via satellite communication systems and
civilian systems.
As good as this system was at the time throughout the 1980's it wasn't long until this system was
also replaced by the Bowman system, which I believe took place around the beginning of 2004.

Positives
• Uses multi channels of ultra high frequencies and super high frequencies links, this allows it
to carry voice, data, telegraph etc. communication.
• It used encrypted communication which only allowed certain devices to access the
network.
• It's secure and reliable
