Between 1989 and 1994 the political structure of South Africa would
change dramatically
In 1989 the National Party was in power; the NAC had been banned
since 1960 with its leaders in prison or exile.
Many predicted a dangerous uprising or civil war.
A remarkable four years followed which involved lengthy
negotiations, compromise and a settlement reached.
In 1994 the ANC won the majority in the first democratic elections
and the NP's 46-year rule came to an end
The country adopted one of the most liberal and highly regarded
constitutions in the world.
By 1989 the NP was experiencing increased pressure
There was mass resistance within the country as well as
international isolation and sanctions.
PW Botha was opposed to change and was forced to step down as
leader of the party.
After suffering two strokes, Botha would be replaced by FW de Klerk,
who realised that urgent reforms were needed.

Secret negotiations with the ANC in exile
During the 1980s it became clear to walk business leaders that the ANC could not
continue to be ignored
In 1985 a group of prominent businessmen led by Gavin Relly of the Anglo-American
corporation flew to Lusaka and Zambia to meet Oliver tambo and other ANC leaders
In 1987 a group of liberal Afrikaners led by Van Zyl Slabber met with ANC leaders in
Dakar, Senegal
Remember that the ANC was banned at the same time in SA and had been since
1960.
They knew the ANC will win so they continued to get a good relationship with the
ANC so their businesses could still run.
Negotiations with Mandela
Negotiations with Mandela
Even under PW Botha there were signs that the government realized
the importance of Nelson Mandela who had been sentenced to life
prison in 1964 for treason.
In 1982 Mandela had moved from Robben Island to a prison in Cape
Town
From 1985 members of the NP government held secret talks with
Mandela
Mandela continued to reject any offers of a conditional release
(release under a contract)
In 1988 he was moved to a house in the grounds of Victor Verster
prison at Paarl, Cape Town
In 1989 meeting were held between Mandela and PW Botha and
between Mandela and de Klerk; but still Mandela remained in jail.
